Head down and see our team with your bucket, pot or bag and get this nourishing kaimoana.

Our team will serve the fish, and you don't even have to touch it.

We arent able to distribute on public holidays due to the fish availability however and it's all dependent on the fish that is caught, we aren't guaranteed on quantity or type, and people just get given whatever we have, so quantities may very week to week gain based on what is caught and what we can acquire, but we do our best to ensure we can keep the same quantities each week, with potential to try and expand as much as we can.

We only ask that people line up between the cones and wait to be served, Also we do not provide any means such as bags buckets for people to take the fish away in bags etc (nor do we want to, as we want to encourage sustainability and reuse with buckets bags, pots,etc), people must bring their own buckets and bags to collect the kaimoana.

What is Kai Ika Project about?
Our mission is to minimise our impact on the marine environment through better utilisation of our natural resources. We encourage giving respect to each and every fish harvested and ensure no part of the fish is wasted.

We aim to connect New Zealanders and encourage collaboration with outside communities through the appreciation of all parts of kai moana. We hope to adjust people’s perceptions that fish heads are actually a revered food source.

On average, often only about 35% of the fish is consumed as skinned and boned fillets – like what we are conditioned to expect from almost all Supermarket offerings. The remaining 65% of the fish, ie the heads, frames and offal are often discarded.

Finally, through kotahitanga (partnership to protect our taonga) The Kai Ika Project promotes kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and manaakitanga (our sacred obligation to care for people). It shows how a simple adjustment in our community’s behaviour is having a positive impact on many families as well as the environment – building unity through humility and generosity.
