Route 52 takes you to Pōrangahau. It’s also the title of Simon Burt’s new book. Subtitled “A Big Lump of Country Unknown”, this is the story of a small, isolated community in a land of big skies, surf and wilderness. Bill Mouat’s book Gold Under the Manuka is a history of Mangaorapa Station – a Pōrangahau enterprise that has been in the family for three generations. Simon and Bill are joined by Hugh McBain, author of The Plough, the Chalice and the Sword, in the chair for a fascinating talk about stories that are uniquely Hawke’s Bay.
