Ladies' Day

Set in June 2005, Amanda Whittington's Ladies' Day follows four fish factory workers from Hull—Pearl, Jan, Shelley, and Linda—who ditch their overalls and hairnets to celebrate Pearl's early retirement. They head to Royal Ascot, relocated to York for the year, hoping for glamour and excitement.

After gaining entry using lost tickets found by Linda, the women drink champagne, place accumulator bets on the Tote, and clash with a sleazy TV pundit, Jim McCormack.

As the alcohol flows, the high-society atmosphere unravels their carefully guarded secrets: Jan's deep anxieties about her student daughter, Shelley's desperate thirst for fame, Linda's financial exploitation by her alcoholic mother, and Pearl's hidden personal life.

Yet, amidst the rising emotional tension and fraying tempers, their accumulator bet keeps quietly winning, giving the four friends a shot at hitting a life-changing jackpot ...
