A Good Laugh: September Comedy Show

A Good Laugh: September Comedy Show

An all-inclusive comedy night featuring stand-up, improv, and audience participation prizes! Featuring professional comics and performers from around NZ, as well as up-and-coming stars. No two shows are the same!

Doors open at 7pm, the show starts at 8pm sharp at The Cabana, New Zealand's oldest pure live music venue.

September's MC will be Neil Thornton, an award-winning comedian, MC, writer, and life-long teacher.
As a comedian, he cut his chops in the tough New York City comedy scene before moving to New Zealand with his husband in 2014. Since then, he's performed up and down New Zealand and all over the world, with sold-out shows in New York City, the Edinburgh Fringe, and Provincetown, not to mention everywhere from Auckland to Queenstown to bowling clubs in the middle of nowhere for confused sheep farmers. He's a regular at The Classic in Auckland, produces dozens of Wellington comedy shows, and appeared in the TV3 comedy special "After Hours."

He's also been a teacher for more than 30 years, teaching university-level Writing, Composition, Creative Fiction and Nonfiction, Technical Writing, and Managerial Communication. He was also a sought-after coach and instructor for high-stakes standardized testing in the US (SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT) developing an expertise in the science of learning and anxiety management.

In 2017 he founded the NZ Comedy School, helping a wonderfully diverse array of people find their unique voices through the art and craft of stand-up comedy.

"A bold performer with intelligent material. Constantly amusing and thought-provoking." - Ruminator

"I laughed until I cried and nearly got thrown out for snorting into my beer." - The Residents

Best MC, 2022 Wellington Comedy Awards

Best Comedian, 2020 Wellington Comedy Awards

Outstanding Contribution to the Industry, 2023 NZ Comedy Guild Awards

Best Industry Helper, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Wellington Comedy Awards

Headliner will be Lorraine, who took up comedy after discovering that decades of overthinking finally had a commercial application. She has strong opinions about audio cables and road maintenance, and takes mundane grievances far more seriously than anyone asked her to!

Also featuring Aldreen Rodrigues from Wellington! Aldreen is a stand-up comedian who finds the funny in everyday life, awkward moments, overthinking, relationships, and the ridiculous things we all pretend are normal. With a laid-back style and a sharp eye for the absurd, he turns life’s little disasters into big laughs.
“It’s Really Nothing” — because apparently, everything is a joke.

And Sundeia Lomberg, a Hawke's Bay local comedian who produces the Good Laughs series and occasionally bursts into song - or rap!
