MAHANGA BEACH

Mahanga is a white sandy beach, great for walking, collecting shells and beach fishing. This is also a great beach for boogie boarding. It is possible to walk around to Oraka Beach but you need to be aware of the tides.

There are several streams here which have whitebait in them. Remember that this is a seasonal fishing activity (15 August - 30 November).

At Mahanga Beach there are public toilets available at the end of Judges Parade and off-road parking along the beach.

FISHING

If you go surf-casting at this beach you will have to wade out quite far to cast your rod as it is very flat. Mahanga Beach is a popular spot to launch a long-line.

SURFING

Suitable for less experienced surfers | Toilets available

Beach break and left hand point break in SE-E-NE swells with W-SW offshore. Relatively sheltered on the northern coastline with good beach and reef breaks on all tides.

DIRECTIONS

To reach Mahanga Beach, take SH 2 towards Gisborne. At Nuhaka, continue straight ahead towards Opoutama. At Opoutama continue straight ahead on the sealed road.
